Default Shrubs that Bloom

I am looking into landscaping around my house and have decided that I’d like to have some shrubs. What I would really like are shrubs that produce a bloom or berry and will continue to hold their blooms and berries throughout the season. I’ve seen such types of shrubs but I’m not sure what they are called and all my searches seem to come up empty as to what I am looking for. I live in California and the soil here isn’t always the best for gardening; that might be a helpful bit of information to help you can narrow down your recommendations. Another concern is that I don’t want shrubs that multiply by leaps and bounds causing me to have to cut them back or prune them every season. I just want some nice looking shrubs that are pretty and easy to care for. Can you lead me in the right direction please?
