What basic equipment to I need?

My wife and I have decided that this year we should plant a vegetable garden; it is our first garden ever and although it sounds like a nice project, I am not sure where to begin. I know I will have to dig an area to plant our seeds and it seems the equipment for such a task is quite costly. Can you give me some ideas on what basic garden equipment I will need to start my garden and maintain it throughout the season? Can I possibly rent a tiller instead of buying one? I don’t want to go into debt planting a garden to produce vegetables to save us money at the grocery store; it kind of defeats the purpose. If you can give me some basic information on what I must have compared to what I can have but don’t need, that will help me a great deal.
