Post Too much information

After years of living in rented houses or apartments, my husband and I finally bought our own home. We have an acre of land that has never had any landscaping done; it is just a house surrounded by nothing but an open lawn. We have decided that we want to improve the looks of the yard but knowing nothing about gardening, I took a trip to the book store to find an informative book on the subject of gardening. I was shocked to find the shelves full and had no idea which book was going to give me the information I needed. Can you suggest a good book or possibly a website that will answer the many questions I have so we can take on this project in the correct way? We want to do it right the first time and not have to fix mistakes that we make along the way. I need help and just don’t know where to go to find it.
