Whatever happened to the good old days?

Years ago when I started gardening all I had was a shovel, hoe, and a very small tiller. I’ve managed through all these years to maintain the minimal amount of garden equipment needed to plant and weed my garden. It seems every year they put out something new and improved to make gardening easier. I don’t have a problem with the way I am gardening now, but wondered if any of these new gardening tools are really worth the money. I am getting up in years and it is a bit more stressful on my back to garden the way I’ve always done it. Maybe I should consider buying a new and improved garden gadget if they work like they say they do. So tell me, if you can, is gardening equipment they sell now really worth the expense? What are some of the advantages of these new types of equipment? And can you tell me what some of them are and explain how they work?
