Seed or turf ?

I've recently moved house and am at the stage now where i can think about gardening. There's no lawn as yet due as I had the garden leveled. I was going to get some turf delivered but my friend (who is not an avid gardener) has recommended I seed it instead - Can anyone advise on the merits of seed over buying turf. I realise turf is an instant fix but if seed ultimately produces a better lawn then I would be prepared to wait.

I'm all ears........
