Exclamation African Violet is dying

I have a beautiful African violet that has a very long lineage in our family; at least four generations have had segments from this violet which originated from my great, great grandmother. Thankfully I was able to take a sprig from my plant and start a new one for my daughter, but now it seems my plant is dying. I’ve had this plant for so many years I really can’t remember when I got it, but I’m wondering if plants die a natural death just as humans do or can they possibly that they can live on and on? I know this sounds like a silly question but I’m really curious as to the life span of a normal house plant. If I can save this plant, please inform as to how I can do this; I am rather desperate to save it but don’t know what else I can do.
