Post Repainting old garden furniture

I’ve had my garden furniture for several years now and the weather has dulled it and caused some rust. I’m not ready to replace it and thought the best thing I could do is put a new coat of paint on it and just buy new seat cushions. I’ve never been the kind of person that buys something new just because the old one has a few years on it. I like taking something from looking old and used to looking new and dazzling. What type of paint to you suggest I use on the metal parts of my garden furniture? Also there are some parts of my furniture that has some plastic fittings that need repainting. I need to know what kind of pain I should use on the plastic fittings. Also, should I first strip the old paint and rust before I try painting or will it be ok to paint over it? This is something new for me and I need a bit of guidance on the project. Thank you for your help.
