Crab Grass is making me crabby

Last year my lawn was perfect; this year I have been infested with crab grass and it seems to be getting worse by the hour. How is it that I didn’t have any last year and then this year it has overtaken my yard? What is the best way to deal with this problem? I don’t want to use a harsh weed killer that will kill my grass as well. Will I have to remove each and every area of crab grass to rid my lawn of it forever? I can’t enjoy playing outside with my kids because of this problem; it’s just so irritating and frustrating and I haven’t a clue as to how to get rid of it. I’m begging you for suggestions before I set fire to my yard and start from scratch. You have to help me save my lawn; please?
