Unhappy Too Much Mowing

I guess you can say I’m a bit over-zealous when it comes to keeping my lawn mowed. I don’t like to mow it too short in fear that it will burn or kill the grass. I’ve been known to mow my lawn at least twice a week during the summer season; is that too much? Is it safe for me to cut my lawn a bit closer than what I normally do so I don’t have to spend so much time mowing it every week? I also would like to know if it hurts the lawn to mow it if there has been a dry spell and the lawn is quite dry. I noticed that I seemed to stunt the growth of my lawn one year by cutting the lawn after a two week period of dry weather. After it rained, however, the lawn improved and regained its lushness and dark green color. Am I harming my lawn by mowing it twice a week or should I try cutting it closer and only cutting it once a week?
